For sale, we have this rare space-age dining suite by well-known Canadian designer Russell Spanner, Canadian Mid Century Modern, consisting of 6 dining chairs and a table with butterfly extension leaf.
The set was not in good shape, and it took us a few months to refinish it. The table and chairs have been stripped, sanded, and stained in walnut, and look great, with some usage and repairs signs that could be seen on close inspection. The biggest blemish is on the table left far corner (dark spot), see photos.
The chairs are strong, sturdy, and comfortable. Original vinyl upholstery is somehow useable, but chairs would definitely benefit from new contemporary upholstery to better match your decor. We love a green color that would look so fresh! Add $50 per chair for the reupholstering in your or our fabric.
The table is 60" x 36" x H 29.25", butterfly leaf ads 18" for a total L 78". Height from the ground to the skirt is 24.75".
The chairs are W 18" x D 22" x SH 18" x BH 32"
Russell Spanner's futuristic designs combined the sharp geometry of splayed and tapered legs and beveled wood edges with the organic look of natural surfaces, and the curved plywood chair backs recall the modernity of airplane wings. Spanner is Considered a pioneering Icon of Canadian modernism in furniture design producing icon pieces throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, Russell Spanner designed pieces are tough to come by, and are highly sought after. Each chair features unique tapered leg stances and an almost cantilevered looking seat. The back rests are "Bowtie" in shape, bringing to mind the iconic dinning sets done by Heywood Wakefield in the 50’s in the United States. "A very exceptional design being a mix of Prouve and Eames".
